How does baptism represent the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ & what does that mean for us?
I have watched videos on baptisms on you tube and before the person who was going to be dumped underwater was dumped under water I heard your baptism represents the death or Jesus, the burial of Jesus and the resurrection of Jesus. I am kind of confused,no one else died on the cross with Jesus and we were not baptized with Jesus and we were not buried with Jesus and how in the world will we be resurrected with Christ.(Jesus wasn’t buried in a cemetery.
YES, I’ll give you some of the thinking:
Romans 6:4 – “For we are buried together with him by baptism into death; that as Christ is risen from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life.”
Colossians 2:12 – “Buried with him in baptism, in whom also you are risen again by the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him up from the dead.”
BLOOD, SPIRIT AND WATER – THESE THREE ARE ONE.
The Bible teaches that the BLOOD of Jesus, the SPIRITual renewal, and the WATER of baptism come as one:
1 John 5:8- “And there are three that give testimony on earth: the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and THESE THREE ARE ONE.”
John 3:5 – “Amen, amen I say to you, unless a man be born again of WATER and the HOLY SPIRIT, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.” (Because all three are one, he could have spoken of being born again of water, blood and the spirit.)
Titus 3:5 – “Not by the works of justice, which we have done, but according to his mercy, he saved us, by the laver of regeneration, and renovation of the Holy Spirit.” —-(Laver of regeneration is sometimes translated “bath of rebirth.”)
DOES BAPTISM FORGIVE SINS? YES.
We know that baptism forgives sins from verses like Acts 22:16 at Paul’s baptism – “RISE UP AND BE BAPTIZED AND WASH AWAY THY SINS, invoking his name.” (Protestants believe that baptism does not forgive sins.)
BY THE USE OF ACTUAL WATER? YES
1 Peter 3:20-21: “… when they waited for the patience of God in the days of Noah, when the ark was a building: wherein a few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. Whereunto BAPTISM BEING OF LIKE FORM, NOW SAVES YOU ALSO…” Baptism saves you. Peter draws an analogy between the baptismal waters and the flood waters (in like form–actual water).
HOW NECESSARY IS BAPTISM?
Baptism is so necessary that even Jesus submitted Himself to it. The baptism of John the Baptist was DIFFERENT than the one Christ speaks of so it is the transition to the new baptism. The baptism instituted by Jesus takes away original (Rom 5:12) and actual sins (Rom 5:14), as well as all punishment due to sin, so those that had been baptized by John the Baptist were re-baptized in Acts 19:4-5.
(OT reference) Ezechiel 36:24-26- “For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you.”
It should be noted, however, that receiving baptism is not a guarantee of salvation. One can lose the grace of baptism through committing mortal sins (1 Jn 5:16) and by denying the true faith of Jesus Christ.
